The Basics
WordPanic is a real-time multiplayer word game. Each round throws a different word challenge at you — unscramble an anagram, decode a typo, fill in missing vowels — and you race the clock to answer. The faster you submit a correct answer, the more points you earn. Play with friends or jump into a public game.
Getting Started
- Create Game: Set up a room and share the code with friends. You become the host.
- Join Game: Enter a room code to join someone else's game.
- Quick Play: Jump straight into a public game. If none are open, one is created for you with bots to play against.
Scoring
Speed: The faster you submit a correct answer, the more points you earn. Wrong answers score zero, so accuracy matters too.
Rules: Only common English words are accepted — no proper nouns (names, places, brands).
Game Flow
- Answer: A question appears with a countdown timer. Type your answer and hit Submit — or let the timer run out to auto-submit whatever you've typed.
- Results: See the scores for that round, then on to the next one!
Question Types
Each round picks a question type at random from the enabled set. Here’s what you might face:
- Anagram
- Rearrange the given letters to form a valid word using all of them.
- Example: "LPEA" → "leap"
- Typo
- Some letters have been replaced by a neighboring key on the keyboard. Decode the original word!
- Example: "YPUA" → "toys"
- Vowel Thief
- The vowels have been stolen! Add vowels to the consonant skeleton to form a valid word.
- Example: "GHST" → "ghost"
- Word Completion
- Complete the word from a pattern showing some letters.
- Example: "_ _ A _ E" → "grape"
Tips
- Submit early — a common answer beats overthinking and running out of time.
Competitive
Ranked 1v1 with skill-based matchmaking. A curated set of question types and fixed settings for a balanced, competitive experience. Wins and losses adjust your MMR, which determines who you're matched with and where you sit on the leaderboard. Requires sign-in.
Duel
Unranked 1v1 against a specific friend. Create a room, share the invite link, and play head-to-head the moment they join. Same pacing as competitive, but nothing is recorded — no MMR change, no stats, no leaderboard. Difficulty is set from the average of both players' competitive skill (guests start at the default). Perfect for challenging someone without putting your rating on the line.
Party
Full control over the game. The host can pick which question types to include, adjust the number of rounds and game speed, and add bots to fill out the lobby. Great for experimenting or tailoring the game to your group.
Solo
Single-player practice mode — no timer, no opponents. Requires sign-in. Difficulty scales automatically based on your performance: do well and the questions get harder, struggle and they ease up. Sessions can be paused and resumed at any time.
Chaos Settings
When Chaos is enabled, some rounds will have a twist that changes how you play. A pulsing indicator appears before the question — brace yourself!
Underdog Bonus
Trailing players get a fighting chance near the end of the game. If you’re far enough behind the leader, you’ll see an “Attention Underdogs!” screen before the round begins.
- Who qualifies: Any player significantly behind 1st place in the final rounds.
- The multiplier: Your score for that round is multiplied by up to 2×. The further back you are in the standings, the higher your multiplier (last place gets the best boost).
- The catch: You must answer faster than the leader did to earn the bonus. Beating them on speed unlocks the multiplier; a slow answer earns points at the normal rate.
It’s a comeback mechanic — the game isn’t over until it’s over!
Tips
- Watch for the twist indicator before each round — it tells you the special rule.
- The host can dial Chaos up or down (off / some / more / max) in Settings between games.
- No Backspace is punishing — slow down and type deliberately.
- If you’re an underdog, prioritize speed — you need to beat the leader’s answer time to unlock your multiplier.
